SHUTTER ISLAND

Shutter Island was released on 2010 and it was considered as one of the best and greatest movies of all time. It was amazing to watch this film with respect to the collaboration of Martin Scorsese and Leonardo di Caprio. As everyone know martin Scorsese has done numerous collab’s with actors Leonardo is one of them. We can take the example of The departed and the wolf of wall street also.

The story is adapted from the book called shutter island which is not a surprise because most of the movies created from martin Scorsese are generally adapted from the real life stories and books and then to adapt the screenplay from the inspiration. One of the reason this movie is famous because of book also. It’s a mind-blowing story when slowly and gradually story progresses it starts unveiling facts and proofs based on which the audience starts doubting on main character of the film.

Mark Ruffalo and ben kingsley has done a very brilliant work in order to engage the audience when story might feel long of slow paced. Film was also included in the genre of horror but then viewers understand that it’s a psychological thriller because the story connects to the elements of mental health problems.

The colorists has done a very beautiful job while working on the neo-noir color palette for the film which feels very visually striking to the eyes while watching the movie it enables viewers minds to create a environment which makes audience feel the tension and danger going in the story. Elements of nature are used marvellously, so to produce set pieces as authentic as they can and make audience believe it’s real rather than reel.

When officers were investigating the mountains and lighthouse and patients were interrogated background colors will connect viewers to the story and characters mind. The music in this movie was produced by John Powell who has worked in movies like how to train you dragon etc. Which builds tension while main character was climbing the light house and when the truths were revealed that teddy daniels were going through mental disease and post traumatic shock syndrome that after time by time he feels that he is some other person who is a marshall and Doctor lester sheehan who was aware of his patients condition and flashbacks he experiences in day to day life and in order to find the treatment and so medicines were also feeded to him by doctors while he was investigating and his cigrattes which he was smoking were also filled with the components of medicinal drugs and Marshalls were never able to find their guns and when head of the hospital tells daniels that he is a diseased person. who is admitted in this hospital as a patient and that’s why he does not have a real gun. One of the most interesting factor audience should have understood were that local police officers of the hospital was not supporting the marshal officers which was sent by the so called government.

Cinematography of this film was appraised multiple critically acclaimed directors and actors of all time. Because with respect to the indicator of color grading and camera is moved from scenes to scenes while they were climbing the cave and then going to the lighthouse and was inspired by the movies of Hitchcock who was known for psychological horror movies and shutter island is also one of them.  It also films the scenes like when hurricane is coming and lights were broken and water is leaking from the sealing which makes scene more authentic and enhances the screen presence of the actors.  Utilization of sea and sea sickness is shown when marshals were coming to the island.

At the end movie makes audience engaged to the whole time when story progresses it creates tension, confusion and fear also in order to show elements of nature in a way so it feels more original also and does not takes the easy path of generic story and involves twists and turns the tables every minute as it builds the tension, so to conclude shutter island was  a masterpiece and one of the best created art delivered by Martin Scorsese though it’s screenplay was adapted from the book.
